Markets in Crises (MiC) Meeting: Market Systems in Protracted Crises
Facilitated by the SEEP Network, MiC provides a forum for practitioners engaging with markets in emergency and recovery contexts to share ideas, experiences, resources and learning with the
aim of build resiliency in crisis contexts. The community is comprised of nearly 2,000 practitioners representing NGOs, research institutions, training and academic organizations, donors and
policymakers.
The MiC Annual Meeting aims to foster strong connections between new and existing community members. The meeting will feature an overview of MiC’s structure, resources, and activities.
This will be followed by an active learning exchange where community members rotate through a series of small group dialogues focused on topics critical to market systems development in
protracted crises. The meeting is designed to provide a conduit for member experiences in the field, facilitate peer-to-peer learning, and support members to discover opportunities for
collaboration around the topic of protracted crises.

History of MiC
In March 2013, a group of NGOs, UN agencies, donors and private sector actors interested in markets in emergencies came together to share their experiences in applying market-sensitive
approaches to humanitarian programming. One of the key outputs of this learning event was the recognition of a need for a common platform for cross-agency discussion, sharing, and
collaboration around markets. A working group was then created, consisting of ICRC, Mercy Corps, Oxfam, Concern, Practical Action, CaLP, IRC, FAO, WFP, CRS, Save the Children, Action Against
Hunger, and GFSC, to discuss how to move forward in establishing a Community of Practice (CoP) to continue the spirit of market-oriented collaboration founded at the learning event. A second
learning event was held in April 2014 to carry forward the priorities of the initial meeting and to come to a consensus on the Markets in Crises Community of Practice.
Following a survey of all interested parties, the MiC was officially created in February 2014 with an Advisory Committee consisting of representatives from Action Against Hunger,
International Rescue Committee, Mercy Corps, ODI, and Oxfam. The SEEP Network serves a facilitative role for the community and provides administrative and technical resources that
support MiC to: sustain and enhance the existing learning platform; foster an engaged and dynamic community of practice; promote learning, reflection and best practices; and curate,
share and disseminate resources such as tools, case studies, and research.
