South Sudan - Western Trade Corridor in Hyperinflation Times: Rapid Market Assessment in Northern Bahr El Ghazal and Warrap

The purpose of this report is to evaluate the feasibility of alternative ways of providing food security support through cash or vouchers – if markets are functional enough – in some areas of the country where the security situation is still acceptable, namely in Northern Bahr el Ghazal (NBEG) and Warrap, both bordering Sudan. A rapid market assessment in some NBEG and Warrap markets2 was conducted in November 2016, using a semi-structured market questionnaire for key informants. Further price analyses using econometric techniques corroborated the evidence gathered from the field. The main findings of the assessment are as follows.
