SGs and Mobile Banking: CARE's experience in Kenya and Tanzania

Savings groups have proven to be a great tool for providing basic financial inclusion. In East Africa, where technology is enabling savings group members - particularly women - to use technology to perform basic transaction based on mobile phones, CARE’s Access Africa Program is working to increase mobile banking penetration and financial products that save members' time.

Sybil Chidiac - Senior Technical Advisor to CARE's Access Africa Program

With over 12 years of experience with CARE and microfinance, Sybil Chidiac works as the Senior Technical Advisor to CARE’s Access Africa program. She leads the organization’s dedicated Village Savings and Loans learning strategy as well as collaboration practices amongst global practitioners and external partners to create systems that gather and analyze monitoring data to bring forth evidence of programming outcomes which can be applied reinforce program quality and programming innovations for financial inclusion. In addition to her learning support, Sybil is a key technical contributor to the design of CARE’s innovations for financial linkages, mobile technology and monitoring and evaluation across 7 countries. Outside of CARE, Sybil serves on the Truelift Steering Committee. Sybil holds a Certificate in Strategic Leadership in Microfinance from Harvard Business School, MSc in International Community Economic Development from Southern New Hampshire University and a Bachelors of Arts in International Affairs and French from Emory University.

Hamis Chimwaga - Project Coordinator at the Mwanga Community Bank in Dar es Salaam

Hamisi Chimwaga has over seven years of experience in ICT project development and implementation in Tanzania. As Project Coordinator at the Mwanga Community Bank, he oversees projects’ capacity building components in areas of microfinance, entrepreneurship, gender mainstreaming, and financial literacy. Prior to his current role, Hamisi served as an ICT Officer at the bank, advising management on new technologies and training users on the bank’s ICT facilities. In addition to his work with the Mwanga Community Bank, Hamis is pursuing his MBA at the Open University of Tanzania.
