Resilient Markets Academy

Why the Resilient Markets Academy?

In fragile and conflict affected areas (FCAS) households, businesses and communities can react to crises in ways that adversely impact their ability to rebuild markets and undermine longer term well-being. In tandem, humanitarian response and economic recovery programs can unintentionally disrupt and distort market systems.

In light of these challenges, there is increasing interest from all actors to develop and innovate programs that build resilience in FCAS using market-based approaches. In order to serve communities in FCAS, it is crucial that practitioners, multi-lateral agencies, donors, governments and other stakeholders have access to training and resources that build skill sets and capacity for designing sustainable market systems.

The Resilient Markets Academy is designed to meet this need.

Who is the Academy for?

The Academy targets humanitarian and development practitioners and partners working in fragile and conflict-affected settings, including refugee contexts, specifically:

  • Technical specialists seeking to apply market systems thinking in WASH, Shelter, Livelihoods and other technical sectors
  • Early career practitioners seeking to expand their knowledge of market systems approaches in challenging contexts
  • Business development professionals seeking to integrate MSD into program design and outcomes
  • Donors and policymakers who wish to understand the benefits and impact of market systems approaches
  • Monitoring and evaluation professionals willing to improve their outcome measurement systems
  • Technical assistance providers, experts, trainers and consultants supporting relevant initiatives

The Program

The Academy’s programme covers around 20 topics.

The Academy offers a dynamic learning experience and combines plenary sessions which are common for the entire group and specific elective courses that each participant chooses to attend according to their preferences and needs.

In plenaries, participants will explore common themes to market systems development, for example:

  • The business case for market systems programming as a pathway to long term resilience
  • Tools, approaches and business models of market systems development, and how these apply and adapt in challenging crises contexts
  • Monitoring and measurement of market-based programs
