Dec 2, 2014 | by The SEEP Network

View & Download Presentation

In this second webinar of the Learning with the Toolmakers webinar series, Mike Field talked about the Market Actors Self-Selection Management, a tool prototype to find, engage, and retain the actors who will contribute the most to changing the market system. He spoke about why he is designing it, the underlying assumptions and principles, its advantages and the challenges he has faced in its application in Zambia, Liberia, Ghana, and/or Kenya.

The Learning with the Toolmakers webinar series, supported by USAID's LEO project and hosted by SEEP's Market Facilitation Initiative (MaFI).

Speaker:

Mike Field - International Development Consultant

Michael (Mike) Field has over 20 years of designing, assessing, implementing and training on systems and learning-based approaches. Mike continues to provide advice and training to a range of donors and programs on market systems approaches. He recently served as the technical lead on the Kenya Markets Trust (KMT) in Kenya, funded by DFID and others. As a senior technical specialist for ACDI/VOCA, he advised value chain systems projects worldwide. For USAID's PROFIT Project in Zambia, Mike was the principle designer of and technical lead on this innovative value chain systems program. He also played a key role in setting learning and research agendas in value chain systems thinking through USAID's Microenterprise Development Office. Before working for USAID, Mike was the principle technical advisor on a range of private sector development projects for DAI. He earned his M.B.A. from the George Washington University and his B.S. in finance and international business from Drexel University.

Moderator:

Luis (Lucho) Osorio - facilitator of MaFI, The SEEP Network

Luis E. (Lucho) Osorio-Cortes is an International Markets Systems Specialist at Practical Action Consulting, UK. He has more than 15 years' experience in international development and specializes in the facilitation of market systems development and organizational learning. Lucho also coordinates MaFI (The Market Facilitation Initiative), a SEEP-supported action and learning network that specializes in helping practitioners to become more effective facilitators of inclusive market development programs. MaFI is currently promoting learning and advocacy around changes to the international development cooperation system to make it more "facilitation-friendly" (The MaFI-festo). It also is promoting the application of complexity science in the design, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation of inclusive market systems development (Complexity Dialogues and Systemic M&E).

Learning with the Toolmakers is a webinar series featuring discussions that highlight why the tools were designed and how they have been used to operationalize the principles of inclusive market systems development. You can explore all of the tools here.
