Course on Results Measurement

Aug 4, 2019 | by

This course is on results measurement for adaptive programmes, using the DCED Standard. The next course will be from the 5th - 30th August 2019. Click here to download the application form and apply. Watch this video or read below to learn more.

Why do this course?

Development programmes working in complex environments need to understand the context they work in, monitor changes, and adapt their work accordingly. This sounds simple but is challenging in practice. What should we be measuring? What is ‘good enough’ measurement, and how do we attribute change to our programme? And – hardest of all – how do you get decision makers to change their minds?

DevLearn’s online training course answers these questions and more, using the DCED Standard for Results Measurement, a practical framework used by over a hundred programmes worldwide. The next course will be held between the 5th and 30th of August. It will take approximately one day of work per week, and can easily be combined alongside a normal working week. Click here to download an application form, or email adam@devlearn.co.uk directly for more details.

Course objectives and structure

During this course, you will:

  • Learn how to build a practical, adaptive results measurement system.
  • Develop a theory of change showing the logic of an intervention, explore the assumptions that you make in intervention design, and articulate indicators based on the results chain.
  • Understand how to select from different research techniques to measure these indicators, and attribute results to the programme.
  • Practice introducing the DCED Standard during a case study.
  • Have your questions answered online by the course facilitator and other experts working in results measurement.

This interactive and participatory course is delivered entirely online, over four weeks. Participants are expected to spend at least a day a week working on the course.

What will I need to do?

The course consists of several components:

  • Weekly recorded lectures. Each week you will have access of 2-3 hours of recorded lectures, which introduce the course material in an interesting, accessible way.
  • Weekly live seminars. Each week, we will gather for a live seminar (lasting an hour) to share your experiences and learn from other participants and the facilitators.
  • Forum discussions. You can ask (and answer) any questions you want in the forum, and get answers from other participants and the course facilitators.
  • Assessments. In the first and second week there are assessments, peer-assessed by other course participants and reviewed in the weekly seminars.
  • Expert presentations. In order to support ongoing learning, we organise online expert presentations in topics as diverse as women's economic empowerment, value for money, measuring systemic change, and using results for measurement. These take place every two months, and you're welcome to join from the time you do the course.

The course typically takes 1 day per week. It is completely flexible (apart from the live seminars) - you can watch the lectures, participate on the forum, and do the assignments whenever you want.

You will receive a certificate at the end of the course.

How much will the course cost?

  • Organisational fee: This varies according to how many people the organisation sends on the training, as below:
    • £450 per person with 1-2 people from organisation.
    • £400 per person with 3-5 people from organisation.
    • £350 per person with 6+ people from organisation.
  • Individual fee: £300
  • 10% early bird discount before May 15th 2019

These fees do not include VAT, which adds an extra 20%.

Taking the video lectures only

If you want to take the course now, we can grant access to the videos alone, for 50% the above fees. This give you access to the core training materials but will not allow you access to the forum, external presentations, or live seminars. No certificate is awarded. This is available straight away - just email us.

Previous feedback

The course has been taken by over 200 people from around 20 different countries. Participants rated the course 4/5 for satisfaction, and 4.5/5 for value for money. Feedback included:

  • Loved it, thank you Adam. This is a great course that just simply and intelligently teaches the basic logic of current M&E practices.
  • I appreciated the practical examples, input from multiple experts and the knowledge sharing on the platform.
  • It is extremely useful for people who apply the DCED Standard in their work. I would recommend everyone to attend this course.
