Building Livelihoods: A Field Manual for Practitioners in Humanitarian Settings

This field manual was developed by the Women's Refugee commission to providepractitioners with practical information, tools and resources that inform the design and implementation of effective livelihood programs for displaced populations. The emphasis of the manual is on shifting away from humanitarian assistance that encourags enforced dependency towards assistance that is about restoring lives, supporting families and rebuilding communities. The manual is informed by two and half years of research, 10 field assessments covering all contexts of displacement. Content includes: working with governments, training and placement programs, for work programming, in-camp economies, agrarian interventions, microfinance interventions, enterprise development, public-private partnerships and leveraging remittances.
