In this third webinar of the series, Daniel Ticehurst, of DAI, spoke about a tool/process now called Anecdote Circles. Such circles are similar to focus group interviews/discussions and beneficiary assessments of the 1980's: they create a space for market actors to share their experiences in a warm and friendly environment. They are mini social information networks where people can make sense of their reality through storytelling and agree on new or corrective actions. Setting them up and carrying them out tests the capacity of all involved to listen, make sense of and leverage the stories told to promote joint action. Daniel talked about why he thinks the Circles can be important for facilitators of market development and the benefits and the challenges he has faced in its application in Malawi and Tanzania.
Daniel Ticehurst - DAI
Daniel started his career playing cricket for Hampshire County Cricket Club, but after completing his degree in geography and development economics and volunteering in India on an irrigation project, he went on to do a master’s degree and pursue a career in the field of international development. Over the next 10 years, Daniel worked on long-term monitoring and evaluation (M&E) positions in Bangladesh, Lesotho, Malawi, Uganda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, on initiatives supported by the U.K. Department for International Development (DFID), the World Bank, The Community Development Resource Network, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and Danida.
Since joining HTSPE, now DAI, in 2010, Daniel has focused much of his attention on developing systems that put to use financial and non-financial measures of performance in ways that help managers learn from clients through being accountable to them. He is currently leading the development of such systems for a multidonor-funded business sector programme led by Danida, a country Aid Investment Plan with a focus on Livelihoods; Skills and Knowledge and Economic Reform in Vietnam and a Governance and Implementation Fund in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.
