Desde el 2014 el número de personas con desnutrición en el mundo ha seguido aumentando12. Si esta tendencia continúa el Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible, (hambre cero) no se cumplirá y África tendrá el mayor número de personas con desnutrición. Hasta el momento, más de la mitad de la población africana tiene inseguridad alimentaria debido a la degradación ambiental, cambio climático y factores estructurales de desigualdad. En el 2019, cerca de 750 millones de personas, o cerca de un decimo de la población mundial, estuvieron expuestos a graves niveles de inseguridad alimentaria. La pandemia del COVID-19 añadió hasta 132 millones de personas al número total de los desnutridos en el mundo durante el 2020 y ha expuestos los sistemas alimentarios ya ineficaces (en todas las regiones del mundo las dietas saludables están lejos del alcance de muchos, especialmente para aquellos en situación de pobreza). Sin embargo, la pandemia también ha hecho visible las innovaciones alimentarias comunitarias y ha abierto oportunidades para la transformación de los sistemas alimentarios.
